Cinema Verite   (2011 - DVD)
Director: Shari Berman, Robert Pulcini
Starring: Diane Lane, Tim Robbins, James Gandolfini, Thomas Dekker, Kathleen Quinlan, Kaitlyn Dever, Dendrie Taylor, Matt O'Leary, Lolita Davidovich, James Urbaniak, Robert Brown, Shanna Collins, Emilio Rivera, Jake Richardson

From acclaimed directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor) Cinema Verite is the compelling, behind-the-scenes story of An American Family, the revolutionary 1970s PBS documentary that launched a new television genre - Reality TV. Pat and Bill Loud (Diane Lane and Tim Robbins) are approached by producer Craig Gilbert (James Gandolfini) to make television history - to become the first "real-life" family to allow cameras into their home and their private lives. Soon enough, the cameras reveal deep-seated family issues, revolving around the marriage, the children, and the emerging ambitions of eldest son Lance (Thomas Dekker). Also exposed is the ethical conflict between Gilbert and his fellow filmmakers (Patrick Fugit, Shanna Collins) as they embark upon a groundbreaking, unscripted journey where no one could imagine the consequences.

This movie tells the story behind the first reality TV series. The filmmakers did a phenomenal job of casting as you see real-life footage of the Loud family in the movie to show you how close the actors come to being the real family. Tim Robbins and Diane Lane capture their roles so well that you don't even think about them being actors playing these parts. The film itself gives the viewer the chance to put oneself in place of the Loud family. What would we do if we were the Louds and how would we act in their situation? Overall, the movie is a good, solid drama that I'm glad I didn't pass over.
