I decided to choose "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" for my employee pick this month because it is a movie that I have always wanted to see, and it is in the Westerns section which is a genre I almost never watch movies from. When I hear "Western" I think shoot-outs and showdowns, but this movie is not like that. It is the story of the plight of the Native Americans in the American West during the late nineteenth century. It is based on a book of the same name about the history of the time period, and although it is not entirely historically accurate, it is about true people and true events. I have to say that watching this movie made me sad because some of the subject matter was hard to watch, but it was also very good. The story jumps around between different characters and over a number of years, but it is not hard to follow, the structure just makes it more interesting. It also has a very good cast including some people I really like: Anna Paquin and Aidan Quinn. If things like being nominated for awards matter to you when choosing a movie then you should definitely know that this film received 17 Emmy nominations and 6 Emmy awards (it was made for HBO which is why it was nominated for Emmys). If you are at all interested in this time period, these events, or just good movies, then I recommend this movie to you.
